Every time a JPG is edited and saved again, it loses a little more detail. PNG is lossless, so converting JPG to PNG stops that: the image stays exactly as it is through any number of edits. Lumagely converts your JPGs on your device and optimizes each PNG with OxiPNG.

How to convert JPG to PNG

  1. 1Drop your JPG or JPEG files in.
  2. 2PNG is already selected as the output format.
  3. 3Download each PNG, or the whole batch as a ZIP.

Good to know

  • Converting to PNG prevents further quality loss, but it can’t bring back detail the JPG already threw away.
  • Expect the PNG to be larger than the JPG it came from. That’s normal for a lossless format.
  • OxiPNG shrinks the PNG without changing a single pixel.

JPG to PNG: common questions

Why convert JPG to PNG?

PNG is lossless, so the image won’t degrade further when you edit and re-save it. Many design tools also prefer PNG for graphics, screenshots and text.

Will converting JPG to PNG improve quality?

No. It keeps the current quality exactly, but any compression artifacts already in the JPG stay in the PNG.

Why is my PNG bigger than the JPG?

JPG throws detail away to stay small, while PNG keeps every pixel. If you want a smaller file that still supports transparency, convert to WebP instead.

Does the PNG get a transparent background?

No. A JPG has no transparency, so the PNG keeps the same solid background as the original photo.

Everything you can do

Compression, format conversion, resizing, cropping and watermarks, all in one tool that runs in your browser.

  • Smart compression

Shrink PNG, JPEG, WebP and AVIF files with WebAssembly codecs. Choose Smart Auto, lossy, near-lossless or fully lossless.

  • Target file size

Enter a limit in KB and Lumagely finds the best quality that fits. Handy for upload caps and email attachments.

  • Convert & HEIC to JPG

Convert between PNG, JPEG, WebP and AVIF, turn iPhone HEIC photos into JPG, and move old GIFs to a modern format.

  • Resize, crop & rotate

Resize by pixels or percentage, crop to any aspect ratio, rotate or flip, and apply it to the whole batch.

  • Batch watermark

Stamp a text or logo watermark on every image and set its position, size, opacity and margin.

  • Private & offline

Images are processed on your device in Web Workers, with no sign-up. Once the page and a format’s codec have loaded, they keep working offline.

Why Lumagely?

100% private

Your images are processed on your device and never uploaded to a server.

Fast

WebAssembly builds of MozJPEG, OxiPNG, libwebp and libavif run at near-native speed in your browser.

Free, no limits

No sign-up, no forced watermarks and no cap on how many images you optimize.

No ads, no tracking

There are no ads, analytics or tracking cookies. The page’s security policy blocks connections to any other server, so no third party ever receives your images.

Location data removed

Phone photos often carry GPS coordinates. Strip metadata (EXIF) is on by default, so the files you download don’t reveal where a photo was taken.

Check it yourself

Open your browser’s developer tools while converting: the Network tab shows that no image is sent anywhere.

Browser-based vs. upload-based

Typical upload tools

  • Images are uploaded to a server
  • Sign-up or usage limits are common
  • Often split across separate tools
  • Privacy depends on the provider
  • Free plans often limit how many or how large your files can be
  • Often ad-supported, with third-party trackers
  • Every file waits for an upload and a download
